A Simple Guide to Solid-State Lighting Standards

LED lamps and fixtures are the most popular lighting technology available today. OLED use is also growing. The primary question from designers as well as facility managers is “how do I tell which are the good ones?” Help in selecting quality luminaires comes from understanding the standards available for solid-state products. Some standards cover characteristics such as light output, color, lifetime; others involve safety testing; still others provide performance criteria for utility rebates and incentives. In this presentation, Dr. Curran will review the various standards, including what they can and cannot predict for satisfactory product performance in the field.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the value standards have in predicting luminaire lifetime and why that information is often not enough to make good economic decisions for facilities
2. Explore why color is difficult to describe and why existing standards provide no guidance regarding future color performance
3. Attendees having OLED applications will learn why predicting performance is even more difficult for that technology due to a lack of standards
4. Review standards for safety and economic incentives to determine if that data can provide help to facility managers in predicting luminaire performance
