Security and Sustainability Synergies and Conflicts Examined in the Whole Building Design Guide

More than ever, security and safety in buildings has become a priority to protect people and assets. Simultaneously, buildings must also meet sustainability and energy performance goals. Synergies and conflicts exist between these two design objectives. To achieve the desired high-performance building, these synergies must be applied and the conflicts minimized, while also addressing the other key design objectives. Fortunately, the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) was created to help designers do this very thing. The newly designed WBDG website will be discussed along with these design objectives, resources and case studies.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn the key design objectives in WBDG and their interrelationship
2. Understand the synergies and conflicts between security and sustainability
3. Benefit from the resources and case studies found in WBDG
4. Improve their ability to plan, design, operate and maintain buildings by touring the newly designed WBDG website
