Presenter(s):
Joseph J Watson, PE, CxA, LEED AP, Senior Project Engineer
E3 Designs

E3 Designs has performed re-commissioning of HVAC systems in over 30 million square feet of existing buildings. The projects have evaluated system performance and effectivenes using temperature, humidity levels, fresh air quantities, and energy usage as the key parameters. The presentation will highlight some of the common misconceptions and incorrect assumptions in the application of sustainable design concepts, which can significantly impact the performance and operating efficiencies of these systems. We will review actual operating data from multiple system types including VAV, fan coils, water-source heat pumps, packaged equipment, and a wide range of central plant designs. Innovative design concepts including geothermal applications, ice storage systems, hybrid chiller plants, radiant heating and cooling, and under-floor distribution will also be discussed. Our goal will be to develop a methodology for evaluating alternative system designs and sustainable concepts that provide practical and effective methods for optimizing HVAC system performance.

Learning Objectives:
