Strategies for Improving Energy Performance in Existing Buildings

Improving energy performance of existing buildings can be challenging. Existing building design and performance criteria may not be available, requiring investigation and analysis to understand a baseline level of performance before considering upgrades. Building envelope improvements in particular may not significantly improve the overall building energy performance if improperly designed or implemented. This presentation reviews existing building energy performance assessment, examines a variety of building envelope upgrades and modifications, and presents practical examples showing how poorly thought out improvements provided little to no improvement to the building’s energy performance or resulted in detrimental to long-term effects.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the typical systems that impact energy performance of buildings.
2. Understand investigation methods to assess the performance of existing buildings.
3. Understand concepts for improving energy performance of existing buildings.
4. Recognize approaches to improving the building envelope performance of existing buildings.
