Jim has more than 40 years’ experience in leading teams of planners, designers, consultants, project managers and contractors in the delivery of facilities projects for both public and private entities. In June of 17 he retired after a 31 year career with JHUAPL, a world-renowned research and development laboratory located near Columbia, MD. While at JHUAPL, Jim led numerous project teams that successfully delivered more than 30 new buildings (2.1M gsf) and completed over 400 other projects with a total value of over $750,000,000. Prior to JHUAPL, Jim spent 8 years as a licensed engineer and project manager with Whitman Requardt & Associates in Baltimore. There he designed and managed the construction of over 40 major municipal utility projects for clients in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Before relocating to Maryland in 1978, Jim worked as a design engineer and project manager in Erie, PA. During his undergraduate years, he worked several jobs both in Erie and at University Park. During off-time, Jim worked for the District of Columbia Department of Highways and Traffic first as an asphalt inspector and then as a survey crew chief for the 14th Street Bridge Project. During high school Jim worked for several commercial laundries and obtained a license to operate large steam boilers. A member of the IFMA Chesapeake Chapter since 1989, Jim has held almost every Chapter leadership and committee position. Internationally he served on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the International Credentials Commission which is responsible for overseeing IFMA’s Credentials program. Jim also contributed to numerous teams, committees and task forces that developed benchmarking surveys and the Association’s first Balanced Scorecard. In 2017 Jim delivered a presentation on personal career management at the Mid Atlantic Buildings and Facilities Managers Conference. He has also presented on various topics at World Workplace, was a regular presenter at the IFMA Research Committee Best Practices forums and has taught the CFM review and other classes. Jim has contributed chapters to 3 books on Facilities Management and lectured on FM topics at George Washington, George Mason and Johns Hopkins Universities. He has a BS in Civil Engineering from Penn State and a MS in Technical Project Management from Johns Hopkins University. In community activities Jim chaired his Village Board for 10 years and served on the Columbia Association Board of Directors and several other community organizations. He is actively engaged in Leadership Howard County and has served on the Leadership Essentials program with the goal to develop future community leaders.
