LEDs and Lighting Controls: Exciting Future With Some Cautions

The future of the lighting industry is full of promise, as LEDs become the dominant light source and lighting controls become commonplace. From new wiring approaches to smartphone controls, the combination of LEDs and lighting controls will bring exciting new features, previously unavailable. An age of "personal lighting" will forever change how lighting is used, allowing occupants to set personal preferences for their environment. Color and visual clues will allow the environment to communicate with building occupants. Dr. Curran will offer some cautions to those responsible for the residences, commercial, industrial and campus facilities where this wondrous future will unfold.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss how lighting controls will expand to include all lighting environments and what attendees must do to prepare for that expansion
2. Examine the implications to business as the ability of LEDs to provide almost unlimited color choices vastly expands the use of color to affect mood and health of building occupants
3. Explain what the new lighting paradigm of "personal lighting" controls will mean as controls and LEDs blend into one comprehensive offering
4. Determine how to support new lighting control architectures/methods and what this implies to those responsible for facilities
