David Borchardt, P.E.

David is an experienced technical and management professional who brings over 30 years of real estate development, building design, construction, and operations experience to MD Energy Advisors. In his role, he works as the lead to redesign existing HVAC systems for energy efficiency in systems ranging from unitary systems for senior living/continuum care facilities to large central plants for commercial office buildings, industrial, and large-scale hospitality projects. Formerly, David was the Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Project Manager for The Tower Companies, where he oversaw the transformation of a sustainability program from initial concept to reality, while ensuring these initiatives increased cash flow. He has held numerous other senior leadership positions, including as Vice President of Development for Lerner Enterprises, where he was responsible for the oversight of both new and existing mixed-use and multifamily projects. David’s expertise is highly sought after as a consultant; speaker at over 75 events and international conferences; and author and contributor for articles, including a Harvard Business School case study. Since 2011, David has been an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies, Masters in Real Estate, and Urban and Regional Planning programs, where he created and teaches a course entitled: Sustainable Development and Construction. He has earned numerous licenses and certifications, including as a Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED BD+C, and Certified Project Manager. For nearly 20 years he has volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. David was on the Board of Blackrock Center for the Arts for seven years. David has numerous professional affiliations, including membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He formed the Real Estate Sustainability Working Group and sat on the BOMA BEEP Advisory Board. David earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University, as well as a Principles of System Engineering Certificate from the University of Washington.
